THE FABRIC

Ikat is one of the oldest resist-dyeing textile techniques
in the world — practiced independently in West Africa,
Central America, Southeast Asia, and South Asia for
centuries. The fabric you see in this piece is a rainbow
ikat patchwork: sections of different handwoven ikat
textiles sewn together, each strip woven separately
before being joined.

The multi-stripe, multi-color patchwork quality of this
piece is not printed — it is woven. Each section of
fabric was made by hand.

Transparently, tartan/plaid isn't indigenous to the global diaspora. In its traditional form, it is historically associated with Scottish Highland culture and Celtic textile traditions, however, variations of plaid weave exist across many cultures including parts of West Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. The specific black and white plaid is in the same family as tartan and madras plaid, which originates from Chennai (Madras), India and is a traditional South Asian handwoven cotton plaid with a long history predating British colonization.

Because fabrics are handmade and globally sourced, your
piece will have natural variations in color, stripe width,
and pattern placement compared to the photo. This is not
a flaw. This is handmade artisan textile at its most honest.
