PROPOSED GUIDE · FOR CARISMA'S REVIEW

A closer look at the textures, patterns, and details behind your style.
Clothing has more to discover than its silhouette. Explore the difference between woven patterns and printed designs, learn a few textile terms, and take a closer look at the details that give a piece its character.
What is Kente?
Kente is a woven textile associated with Asante and Ewe weaving traditions. Narrow woven strips are joined to create larger cloths, bringing color, rhythm, and intricate pattern together.
Woven Kente and Kente-inspired prints are different. A printed design can draw inspiration from Kente's appearance without using its weaving technique. Check each product's description for its confirmed materials and construction.
What is Ikat?
Ikat is a textile technique in which yarns are bound and dyed before weaving. The pattern develops as those prepared threads come together on the loom.
Ikat-inspired prints recreate a visual effect through printing. A patterned fabric's appearance alone does not establish how it was made.
What is Ankara?
Ankara commonly refers to colorful printed fabrics also called African wax prints. Their history connects industrial adaptations of Indonesian batik with the tastes and creativity of African consumers.
Ankara describes a textile tradition and category—not a guarantee that a particular fabric was hand-printed or manufactured in Africa.
Details worth a closer look
Cowrie shells, beadwork, stitching, and contrasting textures can change the character of a garment or accessory. Look closely at how a detail is placed: along an edge, across a surface, or as a single focal point. Each choice shapes how a piece catches the eye.
